[scroll down for Partner updates]

We’re excited to announce that, after gathering input from our community, the date for the soft opening of the John Gullo Home for Children is set for Saturday, November 23rd! Thanks to all who took the survey.

With the construction complete, and the home now mostly furnished and equipped, this soft opening marks a crucial step in preparing the facility for the arrival of children. We will get to the details of the event in a moment, but for now…

What Happens Next?

Our newly appointed Facility Director will officially start on November 1st, and her first month will be dedicated to critical preparations for supporting families and welcoming children.

The Facility Director will lead key efforts to:

  • Ensure that all systems and utilities in the home are functioning properly.

  • Work with local government authorities and agencies to finalize business processes, policies, compliance guidelines, and permits.

  • Host site visits by agencies inspecting fire safety, building security, sanitation, privacy standards, and more.

  • Conduct interviews and hire additional staff needed for the home’s operation.

  • Assemble the final pieces of furniture and collect the remaining items needed for the home.

We still need your help to fully furnish and equip the home with the remaining essentials. If you’d like to contribute, please check out our wishlist of items still needed to help us complete this important step.

Join Us on November 23rd!

On the day of the soft opening, you’ll have the opportunity to:

  • Tour the home and see the living spaces, children’s rooms, kitchen, and common areas.

  • Meet our Facility Director and Leaders2Give Board members who will share the vision for how the home will operate once fully functional.

  • Learn about the next steps as we work toward full compliance and readiness to welcome families.

  • Imagine the home filled with the sounds of happy children who are being well cared for during their families’ medical crisis.

Though we are getting closer to opening, we still need to secure operational funding to ensure the home can be fully staffed and functional. Your ongoing support remains crucial as we work toward this goal.

Leave Your Legacy

As we move forward, there are still opportunities to have your name or a loved one's name displayed on one of the buildings, rooms, or spaces within the John Gullo Home for Children. Your generosity will make a lasting impact on the lives of children and families in need.

New Creation Kids (NCK) Children’s Home

New Creation Kids is an independently operated Mexican nonprofit organization dedicated to providing care for up to 30 vulnerable children whose parents are unable or unfit to care for them.

Through our partnership, Leaders2Give helps sustain their financial operations by raising awareness and providing funding to cover essential daily needs like food, shelter, and education.

As we look ahead to 2025, it's crucial to ensure that New Creation Kids has the necessary funding to maintain the budget we have set for them. Your contributions directly impact the lives of these children, helping to create a safer and more supportive environment for them.

Just $25 can support one child for ten days, covering their basic needs. We appreciate your continued support in making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

The East Cape Health Center

The East Cape Dental Clinic is excited to announce the donation of advanced dental equipment that will enable its highly trained specialists, Samir Ganelon, Jose Luis Alonso, and Veronica Tushmann, to perform the full range of modern dental procedures with exceptional results.

Patients can now receive all the cosmetic and restorative treatments available in the U.S., achieving their ideal smile in terms of both aesthetics and functionality.

Founded in 2008 as the first dental clinic between San Jose and La Paz, East Cape Dental has grown into a state-of-the-art practice. The clinic continues its mission of providing dental care and education to local children, offering free toothbrushes and personal instruction in schools. Expats who choose to have their dental work done here help fund these vital services for local children.

With the new Cone beam equipment, the clinic can perform complex procedures, such as implant placement, with precision. The Trios scanner enables same-day crowns and helps patients visualize their treatment, while orthodontic care is also enhanced with aligner therapy.

A special thanks goes to Dr. Randy Mitchmore, a retiring cosmetic dentist from Houston, for donating this remarkable equipment and training the clinic’s staff. Dr. Samir, the lead surgical dentist, has extensive training in implant placement, veneers, and more, making this a dream come true for him.

By choosing to receive dental care at the East Cape Dental Clinic, patients not only benefit from cutting-edge treatments but also support the local community. The clinic’s dedication to providing affordable care to Los Barriles’ residents continues to be a cornerstone of its mission.

Feeding The Hungry

For the last few years, a small team has set off in October and November to prepare the trails for the Charity ATV Fun Ride. This summer one of the members, Dennis Fremmerlid, passed away. Dennis made major contributions to the clearing and maintaining of the local ATV trails that are often used for the Feeding the Hungry Charity rides.

He will be sorely missed.

The team that prepares the trails for the charity ride are mostly aged well over 70 years old. They easily run out of breath and crack jokes and tell stories to disguise the fact that they frequently need a rest. They spend more time leaning on shovels than actually shifting dirt or clipping bushes! However, they have the satisfaction that their efforts are essential in helping to raise money to feed those in our community who are most in need.

Do you enjoy being out in the backcountry? Do you enjoy the camaraderie of a small group of like-minded folk? Can you wield a pair of loppers? Can you lean on a pickaxe or a shovel? (or, even better, use one!) Would you like to contribute some physical effort to feeding those less fortunate in our community?

If so, please contact Gordon Blackie gordonandjoy@gmail.com We would love to have more help.

SNAP - Spay, Neuter, and Prevention

🐾 Expanding Their Impact in 2024

As of this month, SNAP (Spay Neuter and Prevention - Los Barriles) has performed 1,228 surgeries, surpassing last year’s progress and putting them on track to exceed the total number of surgeries completed in 2023. Each surgery helps reduce the stray animal population and promotes healthier, happier pets.

🐾 Free Flea and Tick Medicine Initiative

To encourage spaying and neutering, SNAP offered free flea and tick medicine to pet owners who participated in our recent clinics. This initiative not only improves pet health but also helps prevent the spread of disease to small children and families in our community. By protecting local pets, SNAP is also protecting the well-being of the entire community.

🐾 Upcoming Community Clinics

SNAP is excited to expand its reach by planning spay and neuter clinics in San Bartolo and El Cardonal. These efforts will allow SNAP to extend its impact into neighboring areas, but community support is needed to make these clinics possible.

🐾 How You Can Help

SNAP is seeking donations of collars and leashes in all sizes, in addition to financial contributions, to support these upcoming clinics. Every donation helps provide essential resources for local pets.

Crescent Moon Project - Art for Children

Did you know that the Crescent Moon Project (CMP) provided over 700 hours of art classes in the past year?! The growth of the program over the past year has been amazing, thanks to the support of the Los Barriles community.

Recently, the children have been engaged in a variety of creative projects. Some are exploring Dia de los Muertos themes as they work on designing T-shirts for the annual celebration.

The younger students have been experimenting with watercolor paints, exploring the magic of color mixing. Watching them carefully combine colors to capture the exact shades they envision has been fascinating. Other students are trying their hand at moldable clay, getting an introduction to sculpture, while some are busy designing frames to showcase their completed artwork.

The Art Studio, housed at Palmas de Cortez, has been buzzing with creative energy and enjoyment. To keep this vibrant space as the official CMP Art Studio, a few additional monthly sponsors are needed. A $300 donation covers one month’s rent and utilities. As a token of appreciation, the donor will receive a unique piece of child-created artwork, inspired by the local flora and fauna of Baja. Click here to choose a month to sponsor:
